What is Acne Scarring?
Acne scarring occurs when inflamed breakouts damage the skin and the tissue beneath its surface. As the skin heals, it produces collagen to repair the injury. When this healing response is disrupted, the result can be permanent changes in the skin's texture and appearance. Too little collagen production can lead to depressed or pitted scars, while excess collagen may create raised scars.
Acne scars can take several forms. The most common are atrophic scars, including icepick, boxcar, and rolling scars, which appear as indentations in the skin. Some individuals may also experience discoloration following a breakout. While often mistaken for true scarring, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a separate concern characterized by dark marks left behind after acne heals.
Acne scarring can affect both the texture and tone of the skin long after active breakouts have resolved. Fortunately, advanced treatments can help stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce the visibility of scars, creating a smoother, more even complexion.
